who invented embossing, die cutting and other special effects for printing?
I want to know the history of the technology and how people in past used to make their printing things pretty.
It is a fascinating subject to send your query about. I can only start you off by explaining that the monks of he Middle Ages would have hand printed their manuscripts and hand drawn their illustrations and vibrantly painted them in, illuminating them with leaf gold. They came out stunningly. With the invention of the printing press manuscripts could be set out in wood block letters and many sheets run off. Why in a day they could make say, ten copies of a page that would have taken a monk a month to meticulously accomplish. But without the illuminations.
Things improved so much in the ensuing hundreds of years. The process of book binding became simplified. Paper manufacture improved. Inks became more fast and books were coming off the printing press as fast as you could count them. Artists rolled sheets of copper flat and drew pictures upon them with a stylus, which caused a channel which would hold ink and release it onto paper when pressure was applied. Hence the printing form of engravings was created.
By 1914, early newspapers advertised the fact that they would be printing a black and white photograph a week in advance. Soon pictures taken the same day and readied for printing immediately were common place. I never imagined that I would see the day when colour printing would be quite common in newspapers. Only 25 years ago the major newspapers advertised in advance that they would be issuing a colour supplement. Fancy printing such as used on greetings cards
developed in pace with the invention of luminous inks and foil printing.
all within the last twenty years. Isn't that marvellous?
The printing industry is a very competitive business. Machines can cost upwards of one million dollars each but to survive in the industry, a business must have them. But I cannot give you names as to who invented what. Regrettably, the inventors seem to be neglected persons in this sphere whereas the manufacturers push their products and their brand names.
Thank you for asking us all this interesting question.
